Friday, May 28th, 2010
Basilica di San Marco
Piazza San Marco 2 – Milano
Entrance: it would be appreciated a contribution from 15€

Friday, May 28th, 2010, in the Basilica of San Marco in Milan, a solidarity concert will be organized. With this event, the Ivo de Carneri Foundation, in occasion of the 10 years of activity of the Public Health Laboratory Ivo de Carneri in Pemba (Zanzibar, Tanzania), desires to bring attention to the neglected tropical diseases and the relevance of training and research in Africa, and raise funds for projects.

The choral group Canti Corum , with Maestro Vincenzo Simmarano, will propose an evening of songs from different cultures and places.

Neglected tropical diseases are infectious and parasitic diseases that mark the lives of over one billion people worldwide, causing pain, disability and death. Prevalent in poor countries and among the poorest people on Earth, they affect not only the health but also economic and social development. Nevertheless, for many of these diseases there are drugs available and at affordable costs. The ten years of the Public Health Laboratory Ivo de Carneri, active since 2000 and integrated into the local health system, show the possibility to do research and training in countries where these diseases still mark the life of the community. Since its establishment sixteen years ago, the commitment of the Ivo de Carneri Foundation has been the promotion of projects on poverty related diseases, through international cooperation, training and research.

Open Day 2009

Saturday 12 December 2009, from 10 a.m. to 19 p.m.
Viale Monza 44 and Viale Monza 57 – Milan (MM Pasteur)

After the successful experience in 2008, to Support Christmas 2009 the Ivo de Carneri Foundation once again is opening its doors to supporters, friends and all those who wish to know its initiatives and actions to help countries in developing world.

Saturday 13 December, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m, anyone who is interested in the activities of the Foundation will be able to meet its staff, ask for information about the projects and about the possibilities to support them.

The Ivo de Carneri Foundation Open Day is “twinned” as in 2008 with the Open Day of Terre des Hommes Italy, whose offices are just over the road. This two non-governmental organizations (NGOs), which represent the “pole of solidarity” in a multi-ethnic area of Milan, have been working for years in aid of developing countries and have committed themselves to increasing the awareness among the Italian people. The Ivo de Carneri Foudation and Terre des Hommes Italy have decided to make the event coincide to emphasize the common aspects of the initiatives they carry on alongside the poorest communities.

The detailed programme of the Open Day will be provided in the coming days. The event will represent an opportunity to know the reality of the countries where both organizations work and carry out their projects, thanks to the pictures, the examples of local handcrafts and the stories of the people who have had concrete experiences.

Last night, October 21st, at the Teatro Leonardo da Vinci in Milan, the Sinafrica group celebrated the 15 years of the Ivo de Carneri Foundation. The group took the audience in the happy atmosphere of a tipical celebration in an African village, with their music, songs and dance. All the people were taken into the world of African culture, thanks to the notes and the enthusiasm of the performers, who also invited the audience to dance with their music and rhythm. The Sinafrica had already played in Cles (Trento) a few days ago, with a concert in Piazza Grande Saturday, October 17th. The Ivo de Carneri Foundation thanks all the people who enabled the realization and the success of these days in Cles and in Milan, and thanks all those who follow and support its activities.

Between May 9th and 31th, the Ivo de Carneri Foundation will follow the Giro d’Italia from Venice to Rome. For the 100 years of the bicycle race (the first race dates back in May 1909), the Giro del Centenario (centenary ride) has been organized together with the Giro della solidarietà (solidarity ride), with the presence of some associations, among which the Ivo de Carneri Foundation. At the end of every single race two stands will be set up in the welcome area to host different associations.

The Ivo de Carneri Foundation, which this year celebrates the 15th anniversary, is committed in research, training and treatment of parasitic and infectious diseases in developing countries. These diseases are born in poor settings and threaten the life and the future of families and entire countries. Neglected tropical diseases, which include parasitic diseases, afflict the life of one sixth of the world population, a billion of people. Yet, a lot of these diseases could disappeare with a small economic commitment: 50 cent/year/person is enough to treat seven diseases (onchocerciasis, lymphatic filariasis, schistosomiasis, trachoma and three soil transmitted helminthiasis). Many of these diseases were also present in the developed world, including Italy. They disappeared with the improvement of sanitation.

Since years the Ivo de Carneri Foundation supports projects on neglected tropical diseases, including the construction in Africa of the Public Health Laboratory Ivo de Carneri for the diagnosis and the research on neglected tropical diseases. Built on the island of Pemba (Zanzibar archipelago, Tanzania), the Laboratory has been active since 2000 and integrated into the local health system.

For a lot of neglected tropical diseases drugs exist and the cost of therapy is affordable: the possibility to eliminate them also from developing countries is a reality.

Open Day

Saturday 13 December 2008, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Viale Monza 57 and Viale Monza 44, Milan (MM Pasteur)

This year the Ivo de Carneri Foundation is opening its doors to supporters and friends for a whole day to Support Christmas 2008. The Foundation will present its projects and activities intended to help countries in the developing world.

Saturday 13 December, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

You will able to meet the Foundation staff, get to know what each one does and ask for information about projects and ways of providing support for its job in the world.

The Ivo de Carneri Foundation Open Day offers an opportunity to find out about health interventions that have been completed, and others still in progress in Africa and Asia. A movie will illustrate the health situation and life on Pemba Island (Tanzania), where the Foundation has been working for many years. You can expand your knowledge about diseases that have long disappeared from the industrialized world, but still leave a life-long mark on children and whole populations elsewhere. The pictures and the samples of local art will help you discover the places where the Foundation works and get to know the different projects that need your support.

The Ivo de Carneri Foundation Open Day is “twinned” this year with the Open day of Terre des Hommes Italy, whose offices are just over the road from us. These two non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have been committed for years in projects for the South of the world and also in campaigns in Italy to boost awareness of this work. They have decided to join forces this time, in order to set up a new “pole of solidarity” in an area of Milan known for its multi-ethnicity.

Thursday May 22, there was a big solidarity concert, Due cori per l’Africa (Two Choirs for Africa) at the Church of San Marco in Milan, Italy, attended by a big and enthusiastic audience.

First out was the Coro Bach of Milan, with 42 members, under the direction of the Choral director Sandro Rodeghiero, who performed Komm Jesu, komm by Johann Sebastian Bach and Magnificat by Johann Pachelbel.

It was followed by the performance of the Hesston College Choral, from the U.S., visiting Italy on their European Tour: 29 members directed by the two Choral directors Bradley Kauffman and Kenneth Rodgers, performing several musical pieces from their polyphonic repertoire (Washington by William Billings, Shout to God by David Gerig, Alleluia by Randall Thomson among others) and some spirituals.

Several musical pieces were accompanied on organ by the director Kenneth Rodgers.

The evening ended with a performance by the two choirs together of My God is so High (spiritual) by Moses Hogan, repeated also as an encore on request, and Herivimskaja pesn by Petr Ilic Chajkovskij.

The income of this event support the Ivo de Carneri Foundation’s health cooperation projects in Africa, more specifically for control programmes against Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs).
