The detailed programme of the Open Day will be provided in the coming days. The event will represent an opportunity to know the reality of the countries where both organizations work and carry out their projects, thanks to the pictures, the examples of local handcrafts and the stories of the people who have had concrete experiences.

A concert for the birthday

Insert in Events the day September 16, 2009

For its birthday, fifteen years, the Ivo de Carneri Foundation organizes an evening dedicated to African music with the group Sinafrica, “Music from Africa – not to forget the diseases of poverty”. The event will allow to present the Foundation’s activities in the prevention and treatment of infectious and parasitic diseases and to raise funds for projects. The evening will be in Milan on October 21, at the 9.00  p.m., at the Leonardo da Vinci Theatre, Via Ampère 1. It’s open to anyone wishing to support the Foundation’s activities and to know the world of African culture.

The decision to celebrate fifteen years of activities with the music of the African continent represents the will to draw attention to this continent and the neglected tropical diseases, obstacles to the future of populations and countries. The neglected tropical diseases are infectious and parasitic diseases that mark the lives of over one billion people worldwide, causing suffering and disability. For many of these diseases, there are drugs, available and at affordable cost. The neglected tropical diseases affecting the poorest countries and peoples of the world, a burden not only on the population’s health but also on the economic and social development.
Since its birth, the commitment of the Ivo de Carneri Foundation is to promote projects on these diseases of poverty, with international cooperation, training and research. This includes the construction in Africa of the Public Health Laboratory Ivo de Carneri, for diagnosis and research on endemic diseases. Built on Pemba island (archipelago of Zanzibar, Tanzania), the Laboratory has been active since 2000 and integrated into the local health system.

The Ivo de Carneri Foundation at the Giro d’Italia

Insert in Events the day May 8, 2009

Between May 9th and 31th,  the Ivo de Carneri Foundation will follow the Giro d’Italia from Venice to Rome. For the 100 years of the bicycle race (the first race dates back in May 1909), the Giro del Centenario (centenary ride) has been organized together with  the Giro della solidarietà (solidarity ride), with the presence of some associations, among which the Ivo de Carneri Foundation. At the end of every single race two stands will be set up in the welcome area to host different associations.

The Ivo de Carneri Foundation, which this year celebrates the 15th anniversary, is committed in research, training and treatment of parasitic and infectious diseases in developing countries. These diseases are born in poor settings  and threaten  the life and the future of families and entire countries. Neglected tropical diseases, which include parasitic diseases, afflict the life of one sixth of the world population, a billion of people. Yet, a lot of these diseases could disappeare with a small economic commitment: 50 cent/year/person is enough to treat seven diseases (onchocerciasis, lymphatic filariasis, schistosomiasis, trachoma and three soil transmitted helminthiasis). Many of these diseases were also present in the developed world, including Italy. They  disappeared with the improvement of sanitation.

Since years the Ivo de Carneri Foundation supports projects on neglected tropical diseases, including the construction in Africa of the Public Health Laboratory Ivo de Carneri for the diagnosis and the research on neglected tropical diseases. Built on the island of Pemba (Zanzibar archipelago, Tanzania), the Laboratory has been active since 2000 and integrated into the local health system.

For a lot of neglected tropical diseases drugs exist and the cost of therapy is affordable: the possibility to eliminate them also from developing countries is a reality

Ivo de Carneri Foundation and Terre des Hommes Italy

Open Day

Saturday 13 December 2008, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Viale Monza 57 and Viale Monza 44,  Milan (MM Pasteur)

This year the Ivo de Carneri Foundation is opening its doors to supporters and friends for a whole day to Support Christmas 2008.  The Foundation will present its projects and activities intended to help countries in the developing world.

                                 Saturday 13 December, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

You will able to meet the Foundation staff, get to know what each one does and ask for information about projects and ways of providing support for its job in the world.

The Ivo de Carneri Foundation Open Day offers an opportunity to find out about health interventions that have been completed, and others still in progress in Africa and Asia.  A movie will illustrate the health situation and life on Pemba Island (Tanzania), where the Foundation has been working for many years.  You can expand your knowledge about diseases that have long disappeared from the industrialized world, but still leave a life-long mark on children and whole populations elsewhere.  The pictures and the samples of local art will help you discover the places where the Foundation works and get to know the different projects that need your support.

The Ivo de Carneri Foundation Open Day is “twinned” this year with the Open day of Terre des Hommes Italy, whose offices are just over the road from us.  These two non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have been committed for years in projects for the South of the world and also in campaigns in Italy to boost awareness of this work.  They have decided to join forces this time, in order to set up a new “pole of solidarity” in an area of Milan known for its multi-ethnicity.
