The Ivo de Carneri Foundation has been invited at the 4th International Congress of MAGI Association 2009, which took place in Dro (Trento, Italy) on September 18-19th. The Congress, with the title “Medical-scientific priorities of our society and health care needs of developing countries molecular medicine and developing countries”, was attended by representatives of scientific research and of health cooperation in developing countries.
Friday, September 18th, Alessandra Carozzi de Carneri, President of the Ivo de Carneri Foundation, had the speech entitled “Challenges of promoting Research and Training in Sub-Saharan Africa: Learning from Experience”, with a report on the Foundation’s experience in Africa on research and training, especially at the Public Health Laboratory Ivo de Carneri in Pemba (Zanzibar, Tanzania).
Leaving for Pemba

In Pemba (Zanzibar, Tanzania), for the start of the course and of the new projects, as well as the update of the current ones. These are the main goals of the representatives of the Ivo de Carneri Foundation, leaving for the island on September 18th and 19th: Marco Albonico (Secretary General and Scientific Director), Deborah Cocorullo (Project Manager) and Camilla Veronese (events and fundraising).
While on the island, among other activities, trials on new diagnostic methods and drugs for parasitic diseases will be launched and the progress of some projects will be assessed. Among them, the details of the installation of solar panels at the Public Health Laboratory Ivo de Carneri in Pemba will be finalized: the works are expected to start soon, with a local firm (of Tanzania), which also ensures training of a local worker for maintenance works and a visit every two years for verifying the proper conditions of the panels. The renovation work of the Gombani dispensary for mother and children supported by the Foundation since 2003) will also be evaluated, as well as the progress of the project for safe water in some district of Pemba and the project on strengthening surveillance of endemic diseases in Zanzibar. Finally, from September 28th to October 9th, sixth edition of the training course “Management of programmes for communicable diseases control in Subsaharan Africa” will take place, addressed at European and African healthcare professionals, annually organized by the Ivo de Carneri Foundation with the participation of local and international experts.
A concert for the birthday

For its birthday, fifteen years, the Ivo de Carneri Foundation organizes an evening dedicated to African music with the group Sinafrica, “Music from Africa – not to forget the diseases of poverty”. The event will allow to present the Foundation’s activities in the prevention and treatment of infectious and parasitic diseases and to raise funds for projects. The evening will be in Milan on October 21, at the 9.00 p.m., at the Leonardo da Vinci Theatre, Via Ampère 1. It’s open to anyone wishing to support the Foundation’s activities and to know the world of African culture.
The decision to celebrate fifteen years of activities with the music of the African continent represents the will to draw attention to this continent and the neglected tropical diseases, obstacles to the future of populations and countries. The neglected tropical diseases are infectious and parasitic diseases that mark the lives of over one billion people worldwide, causing suffering and disability. For many of these diseases, there are drugs, available and at affordable cost. The neglected tropical diseases affecting the poorest countries and peoples of the world, a burden not only on the population’s health but also on the economic and social development.
Since its birth, the commitment of the Ivo de Carneri Foundation is to promote projects on these diseases of poverty, with international cooperation, training and research. This includes the construction in Africa of the Public Health Laboratory Ivo de Carneri, for diagnosis and research on endemic diseases. Built on Pemba island (archipelago of Zanzibar, Tanzania), the Laboratory has been active since 2000 and integrated into the local health system.

The Ivo de Carneri Foundation at the European Congress on Tropical Medicine and International Health
Insert in Courses the day September 15, 2009
The Ivo de Carneri Foundation has actively participated at the 6th European Congress on Tropical Medicine and International Health, which was held in Verona, September 6-10th. The European Congress, this year in Italy, was organized by Zeno Bisoffi, from the Center for Tropical Diseases, Sacro Cuore Hospital, Negrar, Verona. Bisoffi was assisted by a local organizing committee, which includes Marco Albonico, Secretary General and Scientific Director of the Ivo de Carneri Foundation.
The main theme of the Congress was “Equity, human rights and access to care”, theme that characterizes public health and neglected tropical diseases, core of the Ivo de Carneri Foundation activity since its birth. Right this year, on October 27, the Ivo de Carneri Foundation celebrates its first 15 years. At the Congress there were several international experts with speeches and presentations to update research and studies. The Ivo de Carneri Foundation had the opportunity to bring to public attention the international scientific studies and projects carried out in Pemba (archipelago of Zanzibar, Tanzania) and in Nepal.
On Monday, September 7th, in the morning session on tropical diseases, the data of the cholera epidemic occurred in 2006 in Pemba, analyzed at the Public Health Laboratory Ivo de Carneri, were presented. On Tuesday, September 8th, during the morning sessions, Marco Albonico presented the results of a study conducted in Nepal on drugs resistance in treatment of intestinal parasites in children. During the Congress, four posters, related to projects in which the Foundation is involved, were exposed: the project in Pemba for safe water, which is now vehicle for infectious diseases transmission; the project for the collection of data on endemic diseases in Zanzibar, to implement plans for prevention and treatment; the project for a new laboratory test for intestinal parasites; the project on micronutrients supplementation to control anemia in children in Nepal. Marco Albonico, as an expert in neglected tropical diseases, has also conducted a session on control of these diseases in relation to equity and human rights on Wednesday, September 9th and was part of the round table on intestinal parasites in the final morning, on Thursday, September 10th. The Ivo de Carneri Foundation was present at the Congress with Alessandra Carozzi de Carneri (President), Marco Albonico (General Secretary and Scientific Director), Deborah Cocorullo (Project Manager) and Valeria Confalonieri (Scientific Communication).
