Training Course “Management of Communicable Diseases Control Programmes in Sub-saharan Africa”

The Training Course, organized by the Ivo de Carneri Foundation under the auspices of the Institute of Infectious and Tropical Diseases (University of Brescia) and the Italian Cooperation, has been held from 10 to 21 November 2008 at the Public Health Laboratory – Ivo de Carneri, Pemba, Zanzibar. Ten participants (MD and Scientists) from African Countries (Burundi, Kenya, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Zanzibar, Zimbabwe) and ten from European Countries (France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland) were involved in the training, all supported with full or partial scholarships. The course was structured in presentations on the main disease priorities, targeted to local epidemiology and control strategies. The PHL-IdC monitoring and research activities were illustrated and practical sessions on parasitological diagnosis of malaria, schistosomiasis, intestinal helminths and filariasis were held in the lab. Field visits were scheduled to schistosomiasis and intestinal helminths transmission sites, to Micheweni cottage hospital and to a District Health Management Team. In addition, the participants visited Chake Chake hospital, one of the main referral district hospitals, and discussed clinical cases management with health staff, a TB clinic in Vitogniji, as well as a primary health care unit.
